Two systems. One solution.

Visual warning tape and electronic path marking work together as a complete identification system. The tape warns at the trench face. The RF marker guides the crew before the first bucket of dirt is moved. Together, they reduce the risk of accidental utility strikes at every stage of excavation.

Mode 1

Mode 1: Visual Warning at the Trench Face

TrenchMark TM-2000 tape is the first line of defense when protecting underground utilities. Buried 1-3 feet below finished grade, APWA-standard color immediately communicates utility type — before the bucket gets any closer to buried infrastructure. The bold warning text reinforces the message. There is no ambiguity about what is buried below.

Mode 2

Mode 2: Electronic Path Marking from the Surface

The RF electronic marker — protected by TrenchMark Armor — is read by a 3M™ Dynatel™ 7000 Series locator from the surface. Each TM-2000 Series model broadcasts a unique frequency, allowing the locator to identify not just that a utility is present, but which utility type it is. This means crews can trace the utility path before any excavation begins.

Installation

Installation

Designed to install efficiently during normal pipe-laying operations — no special equipment, no additional crew.

Confirm Utility Type and Select Model

Select the correct TM-2000 Series model for the utility being installed. Verify APWA color, warning text, and RF frequency match the utility type before installation begins.

Place Tape Parallel to Utility

Install tape in the trench parallel to and directly above the pipe centerline. Maintain consistent lateral alignment throughout the run.

Install at Specified Depth

Position tape 1 to 3 feet below finished grade. The utility pipe may be installed much deeper — tape depth is measured from finished grade, not from the pipe crown. Consistent depth ensures reliable locator response.

Maintain Continuous Coverage

Overlap tape ends a minimum of 12 inches at joints, fittings, and splices. Maintain alignment through bends and changes in direction. Do not allow gaps in coverage.

Backfill Per Project Specifications

Backfill and compact per project specifications. TrenchMark tape and Armor-protected RF markers are designed to withstand normal backfill and compaction loads.

Document Installation

Record installation depth, alignment, and any deviations from standard placement for as-built documentation. Note RF marker locations for future locating reference.

Verify model before unrolling

Confirm the correct TM-2000 Series model is on the reel before installation begins. Color and model number are printed on the roll.

Keep tape taut during placement

Avoid slack or bunching. A taut, flat tape provides the most reliable visual warning and consistent RF marker placement.

Document deviations

Any deviation from standard depth or alignment should be noted in as-built records. Future locating crews depend on accurate installation documentation.
